3-Point Lighting

When you learn about lighting for photography or video, the first thing you are generally taught is the 3-point lighting setup. This is the standard system of lighting that most lighting setups are based upon, and it should provide you with a solid understanding of how light impacts the look of your video. In this system, you have three lights to work with – the key light, fill light, and back light. The key light is your main light source. It should be facing your subject but off to one side so that a shadow is cast on the other side. The fill light is used to fill in this shadow and is thus placed on the opposite side of the key light. As the fill light is secondary to the key, it should not be as intense. The back light is placed behind the subject (often at an angle) and is much softer than the first two lights. It is used to give the subject more of a 3D look by separating it from the background.
